ORTHOPAEDIC MANIPULATIVE PHYSIOTHERAPY GROUP (OMPTG)
What is the OMPTG?
· The OMPTG is a special interest group (SIG) of the South African Society for Physiotherapy (SASP)
· The OMPTG is the oldest SIG of the SASP and was started in 1974
· The OMPTG is affiliated with the International Federation of Manipulative Therapists (IFOMT), which is a non-government federation representing an international collaboration of physiotherapists in Manipulative Therapy.
· There are currently more than 1000 members of the OMPTG in South Africa
OMPT physiotherapists:
· Have a special interest in assessing, treating and preventing pain and other symptoms of neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction of the spine and extremities.
· Have a special interest in developing their clinical skills by attending OMPTG courses.
· Their management is based on thorough assessment and clinical reasoning
· OMPT encompasses, and is driven by available scientific and clinical evidence, and the biopsychosocial framework of each individual patient.
· In addition to their undergraduate training, most OMPT physiotherapists have completed extensive post graduate training in a year long certificated OMT course.
· The OMT course was established in 1978 and currently runs in 6 centres around South Africa. It is approximately 130 hours and is based on the latest available scientific and clinical research. A successful candidate has passed clinical, practical, theoretical exams as well as a case study report
· Successful candidates of the OMT course receive APDL level 2 membership of the OMPTG. More information is available on the website www.omptg.co.za
