How to Become a Physiotherapist

In South Africa there are 8 schools of physiotherapy. The number of students who are accepted is limited. Requirements vary from one school to the next, but generally you will need a good matric with mathematics.

It is a 4 year university degree, which includes scientific, medical and clinical courses:

  • In first year the emphasis is on academic subjects like physics, chemistry and psychology

  • In second year you discover the intricacies of human anatomy (by dissecting a cadaver) and human physiology.

  • The final two years combine the theory and practice of physiotherapy - you will be responsible for treatment of patients under supervision of clinical staff.
