Best practice guidelines for the use of manual chest
clearance techniques During recent years there has been increasing
debate and confusion about the use of manual chest
therapy clearance techniques amongst South African physiotherapists. Some omit this
treatment modality altogether even in instances where cardiopulmonary patients could have
benefited clinically. Others use manual chest therapy techniques for all cardiopulmonary
patients disregarding the fact that it may be detrimental to
some of their patients. The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Group of the South African
Society of Physiotherapy therefore decided to review the available literature on manual chest therapy
clearance techniques and to draw up this best practice guideline in
an attempt to clarify some of the above
issues. A literature search was done on PubMed to
identify articles pertaining to cardiopulmonary physiotherapy. In addition, reference lists of
identified articles were reviewed and textbooks written by cardiopulmonary physiotherapy experts were consulted.
