National Physiotherapy Students Council (NPSC)

Introduction

Steve Felscher (Graduate of WITS University) established the National Physiotherapy Students Council in 1994. It consists of Student Representatives/ Chairpersons from the eight universities in South Africa that offers Physiotherapy ( University of Pretoria, University of Limpopo, University of the Witwatersrand, University of Kwa Zulu Natal, University of the Free-State, University of Stellenbosch, University of Cape Town and University of the Western-Cape). The NPSC is a sub-group of the South African Society for Physiotherapy (SASP) and represents the National Physiotherapy Student Body (NPSB) that made up of all students of the above mentioned universities. The NPSC is also represented at the National Assembly (highest policy making body in SASP).

Objectives of the Group

  • To further the Main and Ancillary objectives of the Society.
  • To advise the Society of all matters relating to the interests and activities of the group.
  • To assist in the implementation of any policy formulated by the National Assembly.
  • To ensure that there is a wider recognition within the served area of the group.
  • To further the interest and safeguard the welfare of the group members.
  • To create an awareness of the functions of the NPSC.
  • To create an awareness of the SASP and promote student membership.
  • To maintain and improve communication of the various universities.
  • To foster good relations with each local branch of the SASP.
  • To foster good relations with academic staff, student bodies, national and international
  • To administer funds and/or assets allocated by any source.
  • To compile rules, regulations or standing orders for the procedure of its business and for proper administration of the functions and duties of the NPSC.
  • To convene and conduct general meeting of Physiotherapy students as may be called from time to time.
  • No action shall be taken by the group in any matter that affects the policy of the society without the consent of the National Assembly.

Membership

  • The eight members of the NPSC become members as soon as they are elected as chairpersons of their respective universities.
  • They must also be members of the SASP.
  • To be a member of the NPSB one must be a student and must apply on the prescribed form to the executive director of the society, as set out in the Societies Group by-laws.

Structure of the NPSC

The physiotherapy students at each university democratically elect a representative to serve on the NPSC. During the first meeting September the portfolios are divided amongst the committee members. The portfolios are as follows:

  • Chairperson
  • Vice chairperson
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary
  • PRO
  • Project Manager
  • Community service officer
  • National

Meeting

There are two annual meetings. If the chairperson finds it necessary a telephonic meeting is held. During these meetings communication between these universities is facilitated.

Comrades Marathon

The annual comrades marathon is an event where the physiotherapy students feature strongly. The NPSC is responsible for communication between the students and Comrades organizers.
